vogel is the word for bird. i was going to call them ducks, but they aren't really ducks... i don't think. since i wasn't sure exactly what kind of bird they were i decided to stick with the generic word for "bird" to be on the safe side.
Yeah, I paused before I typed "duck" and thought, "Hmmm, they are duck-shaped but the colors are all wrong, but what ARE they then?" LOL! Love learning new words. Will be passing this along to the kids.
They are (eurasian) coots. There are many of them in the canals in the city; they are very well integrated to the city life :) with nice nesting places :). Here you can see some photos in my blog:
